Our whakaaro (vision) is to make Maori inspired products that are accessible to all New Zealanders. We use contemporary materials and methods which allow us to keep our costs as low as practical. You can buy from us directly at local markets or through our website. We hope to travel New Zealand attending markets, meeting communities and sharing our experience, as we start on this new and exciting journey.
Sam and I live and play in the Tairawhiti rohe (Gisborne region). We reside in Uawa (Tolaga Bay). We often travel to the Bay of Plenty - Rotorua, Whakatane, Ohope as this is where we have lived for more than three decades. Sam and I whakapapa to these areas. We enjoy the natural beauty of these places and the abundance of food resources they offer. These areas are also steeped in Maori history, art and culture. This has influenced our entire lives and more recently our mahi.
We have been surrounded by Maori arts and crafts most of our lives, however, it has not been until our involvement in our studies with Te Wananga o Aotearoa that we have started to understand why the creators of these works used certain patterns and designs. I am studying Toi Ataata (Maori Visual Arts) and Sam is studying Wakairo (Carving). Within these classes we are meeting and mingling with artists in a range of creative spaces. This adds to our learning and exposure to amazing and inspirational ideas.
Acrylic is our preferred medium at this stage. Both Sam and I have enjoyed working with wood, however, the composition makes it unpredictable and the results are inconsistent.
Inspiration for Sam comes from new learning and collaboration with other artists. This has created deeper appreciation and more meaningful conversations about art. For myself, I am inspired by nature, water in particular and by my new learnings about different artistic techniques and styles.
We are a husband and wife team who are currently studying Toi Maori - Visual Arts and Carving. We make Maori inspired products for all New Zealanders. We use contemporary materials, blending traditional designs to create an affordable and desirable end product.
